With the passage of State Question 792 in November 2016, Oklahoma's alcoholic beverage laws will undergo only their second round of major revisions since statewide prohibition was repealed in 1959. Effective October 1, 2018, State Question 792 and its statutory companion, Senate Bill 383, will allow grocery stores and other retail outlets to sell wine and refrigerated single-strength beer. Other notable provisions include changes to the hours of operation and product-mix at package stores, happy hour restrictions at restaurants and bars, mandatory server training requirements, and expanded self-distribution caps for small wineries and craft breweries.
John A. Maisch is an Assistant Professor of Legal Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma and served as General Counsel of the Oklahoma Alcoholic Beverage Laws Enforcement (ABLE) Commission from 2008-2012. Maisch founded the Institute for Responsible Alcohol Policy in 2016 and provides legal consultation to several stakeholders involved in the alcoholic beverage industry. Most recently, he secured an ABLE Commission declaratory ruling on behalf of a mixed beverage licensee in the (in)famous bacon-infused vodka case. Maisch is a graduate of the University of Tulsa College of Law, Class of 1995.
