How Federal Immigration Law Affects Your Practice

This seminar is geared towards attorneys who do not necessarily practice immigration but need to know how it overlaps with their area of expertise. It will introduce practitioners to issues they may face when working with immigrant clients.
Overview of U.S. Immigration Law
This session will provide non-immigration practitioners with an introductory view of US immigration history and structure. It will also introduce government agencies and the terminology necessary to understand federal immigration law.
Family Immigration 101
This session provides an overview of how US citizens and lawful permanent residents may sponsor certain family members to immigrate to the U.S. This session will also discuss the intersection of this area of immigration law with Oklahoma family law and adoption law.
Nonimmigrant Visas –Alphabet Soup of the US Visa System
This session provides an overview of temporary visas that may be issued for a specific purpose and reason. The session will explore some common nonimmigrant visas such as Visitor Visas for business or pleasure; student visas; and visas for certain professionals.
Employment Immigration 101
This session provides an overview of how US companies may sponsor certain employees on immigrant and nonimmigrant work visas. This session will also discuss the intersection of this area of immigration law with Oklahoma employment law and human resources management.
Removal Proceedings
This session will provide an introduction to grounds of inadmissibility and deportability that can cause a noncitizen to be removed from the US. This session will touch on the immigration consequences of certain criminal convictions and look at the definition of conviction for immigration purposes.
Refugees, Asylum Seekers & Other Vulnerable Immigrant Populations
This session will provide an introduction to who qualifies for Refugee or Asylee status, the policy, process and procedures for obtaining each status and international law affecting each. Additionally, the session will cover visa status for immigrant victims of domestic violence, serious crimes and human trafficking.
Executive Orders and Immigration Policy (ethics)
This session provides a review of the Executive Orders affecting noncitizens and the effect of immigration policy on U.S. families, U.S. employers and various immigrant populations.
